Megasound's Most Memorable Moments of 2008

With so many great weddings in 2008, it would hardly be fair to give labels like “best,” “favorite,” or “most awesome.” In some areas of wedding traditions it was very difficult to “pick” a wedding that was the most outstanding in terms of memories. I guess that means that a lot of our 2008 couples were really tremendous. Now that makes me happy! A big “thank you” to all of our 2008 brides and grooms. We wish you a wonderful New Year!!

And the winners are…

Most Memorable Ceremony:
This distinction most certainly goes to Jessica and Bill (married September 27th at the Foellinger Theater in Fort Wayne). This was truly a fun couple to work with to perform their wedding ceremony. Being on that huge stage with a fall-themed wedding was just the start. Not only was the ceremony truly a production, the recessional included sunglasses, dancing, and “I Feel Good” by James Brown rolling out of the theater speakers. Certainly a ceremony to remember!

Hottest Ceremony:
If you enjoyed warm temperatures last summer, then you would have been right at home during Samantha and Nicholas’ (married July 18th in Fort Wayne) wedding ceremony at the Botanical. Between formal attire and the humidity, we surely glistened at temperatures hitting almost 100 degrees. We restrained ourselves from taking a break under the waterfall for relief.

The Introduction was Unforgettable:
We have seen some interesting introductions in 2008, but I would say that Amanda and Ben’s (married August 23rd in Fort Wayne) was truly unforgettable. Amanda and Ben really love 80’s hair bands and Ben wore the wig to prove it during their introduction. His best man donned a mullet wig for the occasion as well. You talk about being fans...

Most Interesting Toast:
Melanie and Edwin (married October 25th in Auburn) traveled from North Carolina for their wedding. Their best man could not make the trip, so we were given a recorded toast to play for Melanie and Edwin. Not only was it a bit of a tear jerker, it was also followed up with Melanie and Edwin raising their glasses…um, I mean giant brandy snifters full of champagne for the event. Who can forget that one? In addition to their toast, their wedding was also memorable in the fact that they held a breaking of a pinata during their bouquet and garter toss tradition. Edwin was blindfolded, given a long stick, and instructed to hit the pinata with it!

Let Them Eat Cake:
With so many interesting “cake” moments in 2008, this category was a bit rough. With challengers like a Rice Krispies cake, cheesecakes, chocolate cake smiles, and even one groom licking the cake knife, who would have thought that picking only one would be so difficult. For most memorable though, we picked Sara and Logan’s (married May 24th in Hoagland) wedding with their adorable bride and groom life-like cakes. They were so endearing, it was a shame to even cut them let alone eat them.

First Dance:
Melissa and Jon’s (married September 20th in Huntertown) first dance was even more memorable because of the guests. We announced to clear the dance floor (as there were so many children playing) and have the kids take a seat around the outside of the dance floor. It was truly amazing to see all of the younger guests seated in front of the head table in awe watching Melissa and Jon’s special dance together. Almost brought a tear to this MC’s eye.

Parents Dance:
Hands down, Katy and Tom’s (married April 26th in Fort Wayne) wedding took center stage for the Father/Bride Dance. Katy’s parents came into the office the week before the wedding to record some special songs that we then in turn sampled into the Father/Bride song request. When Katy and her father were on the dance floor, everyone was amazed to “hear” Lewis’ voice singing “Army Lullabies.” We didn’t have a dry eye in the ballroom.

A Grand Exit:
Many couples leave their reception in a limousine. Cassie and Jason (married June 20th in Fort Wayne) concluded their reception with an awesome "balloon and sparklers" send off as they made their way to their limousine departure. So much celebration and revelry made this a wonderful conclusion to a great reception.

Twists on Tradition:
We had a tie for most memorable in this category.

Not only did Tricia and Justin (married May 10th in Fort Wayne) have beautiful wedding colors and awesome flowers and decorations, they had the neatest and most adorable table decor. They shared starts from an aloe plant with their guests. The symbolism in itself is very wedding-related as you must nurture and care for a plant as you must grow and tend to your marriage. Even seven months later, my assistants still talk about how big their aloe plant has gotten and how much Tricia and Justin cared for their guests.

Angie and Dennis' (married August 16th in Fort Wayne) wedding reception was about beauty, love, and celebration. Dennis called us about a week before their wedding to let us know that he would be “singing” right after the garter removal and toss to surprise Angie. I think that Dennis did more than surprise Angie, I think that everyone was awe-struck with his rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” This was an awesome that Dennis shared with Angie, all of their guests, and us.

It is truly wonderful being a part of a bride and grooms' special day. These couples, along with so many others, over the last twenty-plus years have added so much joy to our lives at Megasound. So many of our 2008 couples had very creative ways to personalize their wedding day. It has been such an honor working with inspiring people. It just makes all of us at Megasound look forward to 2009 and the magic that we help create in the wonderful world of weddings. Happy 2008! And here is to a fantastic 2009!!

Did Your Favorite Song Make the List? I Sure Hope Not!

With the end of 2008 quickly approaching, the tidal wave of “lists” ooze out of the woodwork. As a DJ/MC, music is a lifeblood for weddings and parties. So, when I stumbled across the Blender’s “Top 50 Worst Songs Ever” list, I had to examine it closely.

I am happy to announce that in 2008, I only had to play seven of the top 50 worst songs. I guess 14% makes me feel better considering how many songs I have to play a year for weddings. At least the number one worst song (“We Built this City”) has not been on a single one of our client's play lists in the last twenty years.

Maybe what was more interesting about this article was the reader's input section. Readers sure shared their ideas of which songs they thought should have made this horror of musical horrors list. Wedding “staples” in some people's mind, songs like the “Macarena,” “Cha-Cha Slide,” and the “Electric Slide," made the readers worst choice list.

The article was a riot to read and sure gives me reassurance that some songs won’t be requested any time soon at weddings.

Merry Christmas!!

Songs can hardly convey the true spirit of the Christmas holiday. Whether the lyrics are about the "Silent Night" or "Away in the Manger" the songs are a true celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Of course, we love to sing about our old friends like Frosty, Rudolph, and Santa. I could go on for hours about the significance of this song and the meaning of that song.

Truly, I hope that all take a moment to count blessings, spread a little cheer to those less fortunate, and share the gifts that we are given every day. The celebration of this great birthday is one hardly to forget.

So thank you to those who keep us safe, who take care of us, and look out for us when we need it. Let the spirit of the season bring our voices together to rejoice and celebrate even if it is by candlelight and a little cold outside. We all need the gifts that this special birthday celebration brings to us.

Merry Christmas to all family and friends; both near and far; and to those who can not be with us!!

Red Carpet and All

I spent my Saturday surrounded by two of my favorite things: Christmas music and brides planning their weddings. I had the honor of being the MC/DJ and all-around good hostess during the Wedding Place's 9th semi-annual View and Headpiece Extravaganza. The rooms were filled with Christmas music from all genres (tropical, classic, salsa, and contemporary). With Megasound, we have so many different options for music that it was very interesting to play only one type of music for the whole day. Now of course, I did explain to a few moms that we do play a wide variety of music at wedding ceremonies and receptions (normally what the bride and groom ask for their wedding).

The rooms were also filled with brides in various stages of their wedding planning. Many had already ordered their dress and were ready to accessorize their wedding ensemble with a beautiful veil, headpiece, and jewelry. So many options were available as the Wedding Place had gotten in many “never-before-seen” veils specifically for the event.

Some brides arrived alone and many were joined by their entourage (MOB, MOG, BM, and more). In addition to all of my instruction on what they needed to do, the brides were treated to sweets from Don Hall’s Takes the Cake. They also received a complimentary hair up-do and mini-makeover by Angela and her staff from Bellus Hair Design.

When the girls finished picking out their accessories, they had photo questions answered by Brooke of Ashley Beige Photography. I saw a few tears as brides and their moms watched previous brides' videos and checked out photos. One of the most colorful parts of the day for all was the beautiful flowers on display from One of a Kind Events. Many brides took the opportunity to check out the hottest floral trends and colors and talk with Linda about their wedding plans.

All and all, it was a very full day. The unique layout for the event transformed the Wedding Place into a palace of bling and beauty…red carpet and all.

It's War...No "Bride Wars"!!

“Bride Wars” is coming to the big screen. I am so excited on the upcoming movie with Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway.

To make things even more exiting in Fort Wayne, we (Megasound, The Wedding Place, One of a Kind Events, and many others) are hosting a premiere party on January 9, 2009 for the opening night. Details are being worked out and as soon as they are finalized I will share. Check out the website to see the trailer for “Bride Wars” as it proves to be a riot of a movie.

Having Fun with Veils

I am very excited to spend tomorrow at the Wedding Place for the 9th Semi-Annual Veil and Headpiece Extravaganza. I got a sneak peak of some of the unique designs available and I will say that there will a lot of headpieces and veils for brides. The veils are brand new almost all are available to buy on the spot at great prices.

I can’t wait to see all of the girls getting their hair and makeup done (for free) before trying on all of the lovely accessories! Halls Takes the Cake is providing sweet treats for all in attendance. The Wedding Place will also look divine with all the fresh flowers from One of a Kind Events and designer, Linda Maggert, will be on hand for any questions. My favorite part is that I will be there providing holiday tunes as well as handling logistics for the event. I will also be able to answer any questions about your ceremony and reception questions.

Tickets are $5 per person and if you have already purchased your wedding gown from The Wedding Place, you get 2 tickets FREE! Either way, you must have an appointment for this fun event! Just call The Wedding Place 260-482-1250 to get on the schedule! I hope to see you there.

Give Thanks

Somewhere crammed between Halloween and Christmas is Thanksgiving. Poor Thanksgiving is unfortunately lost between two major holidays. What other holiday has a 90% off sale six full days BEFORE the actual date? I love Hobby Lobby and was quite grateful that they had Thanksgiving merchandise at such a “buy-me” price point.

But for the real reason for me writing today…

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks and be grateful for what one has and of course eat turkey and other comfort foods. As you see, giving thanks should be celebrated all of the time. Whether the economy is on the up or the down of the rollercoaster, being appreciative is important every day. We too often forget that our enthusiasm should be directed to having “things” such as freedom, the rights that American citizens are afforded, freedom of speech and to practice the religion of our choice, and so many other “things.”

So I take today and each day to privately say a “thank-you” for all that I have in this world. And I take this Thursday to publicly give thanks. Happy Thanksgiving!!

Fashion Show from a New Perspective

I got to help out my friends at the Wedding Place yesterday. I was in charge of the “tea-room” style fashion show at the Sycamore Hills Golf Club bridal event.

What does that mean for a person who is used to playing music and MC’ing a runway show? It means making sure the models arrive, get their dresses in order, show them the logistics of the room, go over the commentary and music with the DJ, and make sure they look “put together” when they hit the runway.

With the help of dressers and staff, and only one zipper malfunction, we shared lovely bridal fashions and bridesmaids attire with the brides and their guests. It certainly takes a well-balanced team to create such a beautiful presentation. It is a very thrilling to fluff Tomi’s trains as she modeled the bridal gowns. All and all it made for a new experience to add to my collection.

Why Let them Eat Cake?

I always love to see “new” and creative ideas at wedding receptions and Saturday was a first. So many things were unique about Jessica and Bill’s wedding. The most exceptional creation was their wedding “cake”!! Each layer of the cake was actually a huge rice crispy treat. Upon first glance you could not even tell that the flowers, ribbons, and butterflies were resting on breakfast cereal.

I am very glad that when Jessica and Bill shared their first rice crispy treat together they did not have any frosting to get on each other. Creativity is everywhere in the wedding world. A traditional wedding cake would have been a let down for this fun-loving couple. Jessica and Bill’s personalities really needed something more dramatic and marshmallows, cereal and all of the embellishments made their “cake” one to remember.

Congratulations Jessica and Bill ~ you celebrated your true individuality and love in your own "Certain" fashion!!

Guests Follow Your Lead

The “first dance” opens the dance floor. All of the wedding traditions follow. When it is really time to hit the dance floor, most guests tend to follow the lead of the bride and groom. Even the most entertaining band or DJ can only play 15 to 20 songs an hour. So if you have spent a great deal of time working with your entertainment source, you should be able to select music that you enjoy as well as selections that help everyone celebrate your new union.

No one formula is used to create the “right” mix of music for a wedding reception. The biggest concept to get your hands around is what you want on your dance floor. Do you want guests of all ages dancing to familiar tunes as well as upbeat selections and sweet love songs? Or do you expect your guests to hang out listening to songs you can only bob your head to or sit back taking it all in?

If you like the idea of guests dancing the night away, you may want to consider how much dancing you enjoy. The reception is really a time to take pleasure in and create musical moments to remember for years. Take the time to mingle as well as dance with your guests. Even the shyest couple can participate in the Anniversary Dance (also known as a “generations” dance) or a Snowball Dance.

Weddings tend to bring out all types of participation dances. I have written in the past about “the YMCA”, “the Electric Slide”, “Cha Cha Slide”, “Cupid Shuffle”, and others. Interaction and involvement in the wedding reception makes guests feel welcomed and part of the whole celebration. I am not condemning or condoning “the Chicken Dance” or “the Hokey Pokey”; but they bring guests from one to 101 out to a common place. It may just look a little dorky, but sometimes shaking body parts is all part of the fun.

You know your family and friends better than a DJ or band. So work with your wedding professional ahead of time to talk about favorite fast tunes and slow hits that will get guest involved in your celebration. You may even enjoy dancing around the room acting like a train conductor.

Enjoy your planning; enjoy your celebration!!

First Dance Opens the Dance Floor

I started feeling a little sentimental about “first dance” song selections when I was finishing up music for the next couple of wedding receptions. It made me think that there are so many wonderful love songs out there for bridal couples. I generally recommend that a couple select a song that is meaningful to them specifically. I mean this is the song that traditionally "opens" the dance floor and lets guests know that it is alright to make their way to the dance floor themselves.

In the past, I have had couples want to change things on the order of their traditions for their reception. That is fine as long as you have your first actual dance activity as the "first dance."

I came up with a few popular song selections. Of course, the sky is the limit when it comes to "which" song makes the cut.

Always enjoy your wedding planning as it the first step to your new life...

So You Want to get Married...In Allen County

When you are ready to get married you need to get the legal stuff in order before your big day. In Allen County, Indiana, brides and grooms have to make a trip to the Court House in downtown Fort Wayne. I wanted to give you the specifics and you can also call the Central Services Division (260-449-7245) with any questions.

I would suggest that you do not put off this important job until the last minute. The license is good for sixty (60) days from when you apply so mark you calendar and get your identification ready.

Residence
For Indiana residents, at least one applicant must reside in Allen County and provide documentation of residency. If applicants reside in a different Indiana county, you cannot apply in Allen County. Out of state residents may apply for a license in Allen County only if the marriage is performed in Allen County.

Location and Times
The female and male applicants, who wish to be married, must appear in person to apply for a marriage license in the Central Services Division, Room 201 - Second Floor, Allen County Courthouse, 715 South Calhoun Street. You may apply Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (The Courthouse is closed on Saturday, Sunday, and all legal holidays.)
You should allow a minimum of thirty (30) minutes to complete the application process.

Fees
Indiana residents: $18.00 Out of state residents: $60.00
A certified copy of your marriage license, for legal proof, may be obtained for $2.00. Make sure that you ask for this certified copy. It should come to you approximately thirty (30) days after the person solemnizing the ceremony files the license with the clerk’s office.

· Valid operator's license or other state identification, showing date of birth and current Allen
County address
· Certified copy of birth certificate, or
· Passport, military identification, discharge papers, or

Applicants under 18 years of age must have special consent. Call for complete requirements.

Marriage Ceremonies
Marriages may be performed by a member of the clergy (including a minister, priest, bishop, rabbi, and imam), a judge, a magistrate, a clerk of the circuit court, or a clerk or clerk-treasurer of a city or town.

License Validity

One Month until Knot Your Ordinary Bridal Show

In One Month…

I am very excited to be a part of the 3rd Knot Your Ordinary Bridal Show on Friday, September 19, 2008. Not only will I have a booth at the show for our DJ/MC/Officiant services, I will be the MC for the fashion show that evening. This is a great chance to see the new styles in wedding gowns, formal attire, flowers, guys in tuxedos, and much more. I always enjoy seeing the latest outfits for the wedding party. It is really a peak into what my future couples will be wearing at their wedding.

I also get to select upbeat, family-friendly music that is appealing for a runway event. Like a wedding ceremony or reception, a runway show has unique songs that must feature positive message lyrics. In the past, I have coordinated themed music for runway shows such as “disco,” “dance,” and “classics.”

With it being a month before the show, it is time to start pulling together the music ideas for this upcoming event. It is amazing the amount of work that it takes to find just the right songs that are appealing to the masses and still make the musical experience flow with the attire. Who knows what musical gems will be played on the 19th? Hope to see you there.

Contemporary Music is Plentiful

While many brides enjoy the traditions when it comes to music, many brides like to have a contemporary spin on their music. Of course, be aware that most churches or houses of worship have specific restrictions or rules on music for a wedding ceremony. For those brides who are planning their wedding for an outdoor location, an alternate venue, or destination, more contemporary selections are a workable option.

For the ceremony music some of the contemporary selections include:
Prelude - Then He Kissed Me
Processional - Only Time
Recessional - I'm a Believer

As for the reception, the contemporary music selections are many. Just a few include:
Introduction -Crazy in Love
First Dance -Unforgettable
Wedding Party - You've Got a Friend
Father/Bride - Because You Loved Me
Mother/Groom - What a Wonderful World
Bouquet Toss - Another One Bites the Dust
Garter Toss - Wild Thing
Anniversary Dance - Could I Have this Dance
Last Dance - I Could Not Ask for More

To make your own traditions, feel free to select songs from your first date, favorite movie, or even favorite vacation site. You and your husband will be able to create a memorable ceremony as well as reception filled with dancing.

Enjoy your day!

Music Magic

I did some research for a music CD. It was quite challenging as the categories were
Classical, Contemporary, Traditional, Christian, Oldies, and Country for the ceremony (Prelude, Processional, and Recessional) and the reception music (Introduction, First Dance, Wedding Party, Father/Bride, Mother/Groom, Bouquet Toss, Garter Toss, Anniversary Dance, and Last Dance). I thought that I would share my results as it was interesting in many cases.

I will start with the Classical List and have future posts for the other categories.

Classical Selections for:

Ceremony Music
Prelude - Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring
Processional - Wedding March
Recessional - Ode to Joy

Reception Music
Introduction - Ride of the Valkeries
First Dance - A Time for Us
Wedding Party - Sheep May Softly Graze
Father/Bride - Claire de Lune
Mother/Groom - Greensleeves
Bouquet Toss - On Wings of Song
Garter Toss - The Rejoicing (Royal Fireworks)
Anniversary Dance - Moonlight Sonata Adagio
Last Dance - Handels Minuet
Happy planning!!

Is it Time to Cut the Cake?

After a friend told me about the wedding she attended in Chicago this last weekend, I just had to share some of the finer points of "Cutting the Cake."

What should you expect to do when your Master of Ceremonies (MC) announces that it is time for you to cut your wedding cake?

-Your MC and photographer and video person should have already checked out your cake area for the best positioning.

- You and your new spouse should stand behind or to one side of the cake if the back drop will cause distractions in the photos.

- Your Groom should be positioned behind with the you (the Bride) to the front taking in consideration which hand each uses when cutting.

- Hold the cake knife together and make a small wedge-type cut in one of the lower tiers of cake. This will give you the best support in order to keep balance on the cake. Also, frostings such as rolled fondant are more difficult to cut on the cake.

- Use the cake server to place the cake piece on a plate and cut the piece in half.

- Talk with your Groom ahead of time if the Bride and Groom to see if your will use forks or your fingers. Extra napkins should be available for clean up purposes.

- Whether you and your Groom are feeding each other together or separately; be courteous in order to keep each other clean.

- Bring your champagne glasses to the cake table to include in photos.

- The person/person’s cutting the wedding cake for guests to enjoy should save your top cake unless you have asked for the top tier to be used for serving. Many couples save and freeze their top tier cake to enjoy on their first anniversary. Some bakers give the couple a special cake instead of saving their top tier. Ask your baker ahead of time their policy.

- Ask the person cutting the cake to save two pieces of cake for you and your Groom to enjoy after the reception.

- Already have someone assigned to gather and return (if needed) cake parts to the cake person. Many times, cake stands and other parts are rented.

Whether you have a huge tiered cake, cupcakes, or some other sweet treat, take the time to enjoy this moment with your new husband.

Enjoy your celebration!!

In the "Zone"...the 2008 Miss Torrid Pageant

"And suddenly I see..."

Months of hard work and planning came together this evening at the Chamber of Commerce. Downtown Fort Wayne was filled with contestants, supporters, and their well-wishers. History was made by the crowning of the first Indiana Miss Torrid.

All of the 17 contestants were all winners just by taking steps on that stage. It was a great privilege to work with Jama Young and her staff from Torrid as well as all of the girls. It was also great to know that so many people came out to help raise funds for Reilly Children’s Hospital.

From “Suddenly I See” to “Ever, Ever After” the night was a whirlwind of Torrid fashion, contestants, and all of the components that make a pageant a unique experience.

After all of the acts were completed and the votes tallied, everyone held their breath for the final announcements.

Miss Photogenic was contestant #5 ~ Brittany
Award for the Most Sponsors was contestant #9 ~ Amanda
Miss Congeniality was contestant #11 ~ Lovey
Audience Choice Award went to contestant #15 ~ Karen
2nd Runner up was contestant #17 ~ Katrina
1st Runner up was contestant#15 ~ Karen
The 2008 Miss Torrid Indiana was contestant #8 ~ Meagan

It was a pleasure working on this pageant. Congratulations to Meagan and all of the Miss Torrid contestants. You are all winners!!!

Table Numbers...More than 1,2,3

It does not matter whether you use round, banquet style, or square tables for your reception. You have a unique opportunity to be creative with your table “numbers.” This is not about seating your hippy Uncle Ralph next to the girls from the office. You will have to decide on reserved seating or open seating yourself. And if you use place cards or not, it is nice for each table to be a continuation of your wedding theme.

Here are a few suggestions and you might come up with some very creative one that really fits you and your new husband.

Traditional numbers (1,2,3,4, etc) – whether the numbers are on table tents or place card extensions, make sure that the numbers are large enough to read when you look at the room from a short distance. Some DIY brides like to use spray glue and glitter to create numbers that match their wedding colors.
A Year in the Life – take 8x10 or rectangular photo frames print special years and add photos of you and your new hubby. Think of the important years such as the year you were born, the year your parents were married, the year you met, and the year you were engaged to name a few. This gives your guests something to talk about when they arrive at their table.
Places – print off and frame your honeymoon destination, places you have lived or traveled. You can even add postcards or photos from family trips.
How do I Love thee – If you have a lot of family and friends from out of state or the country, print the different languages and how to say LOVE. Be sure to print LOVE large enough so everyone can read it. You might include sweet sayings or affectionate pet names such as “sweetie pie,” “snoog-ums,” and “doll-face” if you and your husband share cute lovey-dovey moments.
Flowers – designate each table with a specific type of flower bouquet as the center piece. This will create a very spring-type motif for those flower lovers.

Talk with your venue, MC, or bandleader about who will release your guest tables when it is time for the buffet. Whoever is releasing tables can go table by table or you can place all of the table “numbers” in a hat and have you MC or bandleader announce who gets to be the next table in line to eat. Make sure your MC clearly announces “how” tables will be released so you do not have a cattle calling at the buffet table.

If you are having a plated or served meal, you can still have a table numbering system. This will work very well when you a specifically assigning seats to your guests.

Have a good time showing off your creativity to your guests. And remember, you are the Bride and you get to be the first in line!!

When “Adults-only” reception is not an option…

…what to do with the kids?

So your guest list contains a good number of younger attendees. Family is a very important part of any wedding. Many couples already have children and what would a wedding party be without an adorable flower girl and a handsome ring bearer? They have “behaved” through the ceremony and now it is time for the party to begin.

Take time to plan ahead especially when you know that you will have a lot of pre-teen and younger guests attending your wedding. A reception should not turn into a parentless, heathen attack with children running in between caterer’s legs, behind the bar, and around the entertainment setups. If you expect a lot of children, see if your reception venue has an area for “day-care” or a children’s area. Some facilities have DVD players to add to the fun.

Even a table or two in a corner can become a children’s entertainment area. Talk to your more responsible teenage guests ahead of time to see if they would be able to help out watching over the youngsters for a portion of the evening. Have things like coloring books, crayons, books, little toys, and other amusing items for kids to play with through out the evening.

Talk to you catering staff to plan a special “kids” menu (which is normally a lower per person charge). Chicken fingers, tater tots, mini pizza, and baby carrots go a lot farther to fill little tummies than salmon and filet.

If you have a theme wedding, you might add some cool stuff to the “kids” table such as feather boas, bling rings, pirate’s loot, and other goodies. Or you might pre-order children’s wedding entertainment kits from Oriental Trading (or other on-line companies) that are filled with books, balls, crayons, and more. Be careful about adding racing cars, airplanes, and sling shots to the mix as it is a recipe for disaster.

So whatever you decide as your best course of action for the kids at your wedding, try to include some fun elements so your reception does not turn into a three ring circus.

Enjoy your planning!!

Why Have a “Cake Cutting” Theme at Your Wedding Reception?

The cutting of the wedding cake is one of the “big” traditional events at a wedding reception (right up there with toasts and the first dance). Whether you have a traditional wedding cake, cupcakes, or some other sweet treat, you can set the tone for the rest of the evening.

The bride and groom feeding each other some sweet delicacy is generally one event very close to kicking off the celebration and the first dance. You can create excitement for the festivity or continue your wedding theme. It is also fun to get a paparazzi excitement going by asking your MC to announce for the cake cutting so that family and friends can bring cameras up to capture the moment.

Be careful with how you treat the cake cutting experience. You might think “ahead of time” that it is funny to “smash” cake in your new spouses face. Be aware that unpleasant results and messy pictures may result in this type of mayhem.

You might consider having your DJ or band play one of these cake cutting themes or pick one of your favorite songs to kick of the party.

“Chapel of Love” by the Dixiecups
“Cut the Cake” by the Average White Band
“Grow old with Me” by Adam Sandler
“How Sweet it is (to be Loved by You)” by James Taylor
“I got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher
“Ice Cream” by Sarah McLachlan
“I’m so Excited” by the Pointer Sisters
“Love & Marriage” by Frank Sinatra
“Pour some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard
“That’s Amore’” by Dean Martin
“Sea of Love” by the Honeydrippers
‘Sugar, Sugar” by the Archies
“Unforgettable” by Nat King and Natalie Cole
“What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong
“A Wink and a Smile” by Harry Connick Jr.

Wedding Arch/Canopy/Chuppah...whichever you want

The Chuppah (Huppah or wedding canopy) is the symbol of the new couple’s home. Whether you want to be married under a Chuppah, bridal canopy, or wedding arch/arbor, you will want to keep a few things in mind for your wedding.

Outdoor weddings are beautiful. Remember that Mother Nature is unpredictable and have a back up plan. Where will you get married if it rains, sleets, or hails? Even a lovely sunny day can give way to strong winds so make sure that your wedding arch is securely anchored to the ground. Having some sort of reinforcement for the sides is helpful also. You can use plants, flowers, or other decorations to “hide” cinder blocks or other support systems. Bees, wasps, and other flying pests are less likely to bother artificial flowers and foliage on your arch. If using real flowers, try to decorate the canopy the day of (or very close to the ceremony time) so the flowers look fresh instead of wilting and droopy.

For your indoor ceremony (not in a church), find out the restrictions ahead of time for placing a Chuppah in the ceremony area. Most facilities have limits on how you can secure the canopy/arch. Your indoor ceremony will have fewer “weather-related” problems than an outside ceremony. You will want to confirm that candles can be used near the canopy. You should consider using drip-less candles to avoid any potential fire hazards.

Regardless of an indoor or outdoor ceremony, the Chuppah adds beauty to a wedding and will offer a wonderful back drop for photos after your vows.

Enjoy your planning!

Things I’ve learned helping out the guys

It always comes in handy to know how to on the boutonnières for the wedding party and family. I thought that I would share as some people don’t get the same opportunities when it comes to adding flowers right before the beginning of the ceremony. The flower goes on the left lapel of the gentlemen. The blossom of the flower is placed to covers the faux slit in the jacket lapel. It is best to come in from behind of the lapel and pin the upper part of the stem so that most of the pin is in back and the only visible part of the pin is through the flower in front.

Always double check the flower as if it is not pinned correctly, the flower will fall/sag to the side. And we all know that looks very tacky in the wedding photos.

"Just the Details..."

I’ve had people ask me why would I want to meet with my clients before their big day. Of course, my question is really “when” do I get to meet my clients face-to-face before their wedding day? I learn more in an hour or two in person with a couple than hours on the phone or email. Now, do not get me wrong, email is a wonderful way to keep up to date and informed on details and the phone is an invaluable tool for creating calm in the midst of chaos. But, meeting in person creates the building blocks to a wonderful wedding experience.

When one sits across from an engaged couple, one learns so much. I know who is going to "dance" and who is going to “hang out.” I discover which songs make people cringe and which ones bring tears. I see “love” between two people and their passion and caring for their family and friends.

How else can you create an ambiance? You have to feel what your couple feels. Of course, sometimes, it is difficult to pull these feelings from a couple so it takes the “right” questions in order to get the magic started. “How would you like to do…?” Most people are pretty good about sharing their visions on what they want to create on their wedding day.

This is also my chance to reduce stress before it starts. “How can I make it easier for you?” It may be this question or something else; as everyone’s stress is different.

Most of all, I enjoy working on the details with my clients whatever the mode of communication. So the in-depth person-to-person interaction really simply makes the job easier.

Happy planning and have a dancing good time!

Do you want to fill your dance floor with dancers?

If your main goal is to have a lot of audience participation at your wedding reception, then you will want to review the following list. Of course, some of the songs/dances may only fit certain themed events. Take into consideration the ages of your guests and the level of formality for the event. If you have a lot of older, married couples then certain group dances will work better than if you have a much younger singles crowd. You may be amazed though at how many different songs will attract guests of all ages to the dance floor.

Anniversary Dance—Ask all married couples to bring their spouse to the dance floor. Play a slow song (or two if the floor is packed with couples) and ask couples to go to the outside of the dance floor when their “number of years of wedded bliss” has been announced. This count is usually something like 1, 2, 5, 10, 15 years, etc until the couple longest married couple remains on the dance floor. Sometimes the bride and groom present the couple with a rose or the “throw-away” bouquet. It is nice to introduce the couple and have them share their advice on how to stay married for XX years to the newly married couple.

Snowball Dance—Start with the Wedding Party on the dance floor. Any style of song can be played as long as it is a longer song or two complimentary songs. Call out “snowball” and the dancers on the floor go out into the audience and bring a new dance partner to the floor. This goes on until you can no longer double the number of dancers on the floor. All remaining guests are asked to join the dance floor and then “change partners” is called so guests are dancing with a new dance partner.

Dance Circle—The bride and groom are in the center with their family and friends forming a human circle around them on the dance floor. It is best to use fun, upbeat, easily danceable music. The bride and groom show off their dance moves and then move to part of the circle and someone else showcases their dance talents in the middle of the circle. This can also be used with guests celebrating their birthday. The Beatles “Birthday Song” works out very well for all to share in a special birthday dance.

Dance Off—Two columns/lines of dancers form on the dance floor facing each other. It is good to use either funky or very up-beat music for a dance off (think of the Dance Off scene from “Grease”). The first two people at the head of their line dance together down the middle of the line to see who is “best”. For that 50’s feel, use the “Grease-Mega-mix” for your fast best selection.

The Stroll—Very similar to the “Dance Off” although it is slower and you should use the song “The Stroll” by The Diamonds. This works best with a group who is familiar with the song or with a 50’s theme.

A Human Arch—The first couple raises their hands to form an arch. The second couple dances under the arch and then forms an arch next to the first couple. The next couple dances under the newly formed arch and adds to it. Each couple does the same until all of the couples have formed a human arch. At that point the first couple dances under the long arch. This continues with each couple dancing under the arch through the remainder of the song(s). A human arch can wind around the dance floor many times if enough couples are available.

Macarena—“The Macarena” by Los Del Rios is a line dance that consists of eight steps. It requires very little movement on the dance floor and this line dance can be used with many other songs as well. If you want to challenge your guests, simply speed up the song at the end for some interesting results.

Y.M.C.A—This dance is for more than just the guys. Have guests form a circle and raise their hands up high. They can then spell out the letters to the “Y.M.C.A” by the Village People.

Conga Line—A conga line can be staged or spontaneous. The best songs to use are “Hot, Hot, Hot” by Buster Poindexter or “Conga” by Gloria Estafan. The dancers join the leader of the line around the room and hold on the hips of the dancer ahead of them. Use a Conga Line a while after guests have eaten because it can be a fast paced workout dancing around the room.

Party Train—This line dance is similar to a conga line although the lead person acts as the “engineer” of the train. “Com’n Ride the Train” by the Quad City DJ’s or “Locomotion” by Kylie Minogue are your best bets for a packed dance floor that moves around the room.

Bunny Hop—This old-fashioned “follow the leader” dance is made up of repeating patterns of eight beats. “The Bunny Hop” by Ray Anthony will definitely give a work out to the younger dancers.

Chicken Dance—Guests form a circle on the dance floor with this old German dance. The “Chicken Dance” song is a standard for young and old alike. It includes a lot of body shaking and acting like chickens for a lot of dance floor fun.

Hokey Pokey—Use the song “Hokey Pokey” by Ray Anthony for guests to form a circle on the dance floor. The song offers a good beat and you almost feel like you are sharing the “Twister” game with your friends.

Cotton Eyed Joe—If you want to add fast-paced square dancing to your dance floor, you will want to play “Cotton Eyed Joe” by Rednex. This version is spunkier than the original and will keep your country music fix in check.

Boot Scootin’ Boogie—A classic country tune (Boot Scootin’ Boogie by Brooks & Dunn) that turned into a fun line dance. It is very easy to pick up on for all ages.

Electric Slide—This mainstream line dance has many variations. Most use the song “Electric Boogie” by Marcia Griffiths. Guests can learn the steps by watching other dancers on the floor. A few other song versions (“Detroit Slide”) have appeared over the years and are really just variations of the slide.

Cha Cha Slide—All of the dance steps are used in the song by Casper (“Cha Cha Slide Part 2"). On the Casper CD, there are several versions. The radio edit is the 6+ minute “version” of the song and that selection is the easiest for most people. It is upbeat and also allows dancers to show off their dance moves.

The Cupid Shuffle—This is an easy to learn, upbeat (hip-hop) dance that uses the “Cupid Shuffle” by Cupid. Again, a song with the entire dance steps included in the lyrics making new-comers at ease on the dance floor.

This list is only a portion of the group-type dances out today. Many cultural dances offer the opportunity for your guests to celebrate a new marriage through dance.

Enjoy and keep on dancing!

Do you hate glass clinking at weddings?

Kissing is a part of any wedding right? If you dislike (the idea of) your guests clinking their glasses for you and your husband to “kiss” on cue, then read on for some creative alternatives to this noisy tradition. Let your MC (DJ or Band) know that you want a unique guest interaction for bridal couple kissing at the reception:

1. Ask tables to sing a “love song” or a song that has the brides or grooms name in it.

2. Have a kissing demonstration—a couple must come up to the head table and “show” the bride and groom how to “properly” kiss.

3. Have your wedding planner, catering staff, or a trusted friend hide Hershey’s Kisses in the reception room prior to the reception. As guests find the kisses, they bring them to the bride and groom for them to kiss.

4. Ask guests to make a donation to charity.

5. Come up with questions about the bride and groom. Print them on slips of paper and have guests select a question from a basket or box. If they answer the question correctly, then the bride and groom kiss.

6. Have guests share advice for the marriage.

Of course, there are all sorts of variations and other ideas to create guest interaction with the bride and groom "kissing." Skies the limit...you could be kissing all night so have fun!!

Outer Space Wedding Ceremonies

I guess that I am just an "Earth-bound" Officiant. I go where people hire me to marry them. Unlike Sir Richard Branson (of Virgin Galactic) who is creating the pathway to marry couples in outer space, my feet are firmly planted on the ground. I know that I would be fine with performing nuptials on a boat, ship, plane, or other unique locations. I have no fear of heights although I am unsure about weightlessness and the whole zero-gravity thing.

I am sure that in the years to come, the “location” question for the ceremony may take on a whole new meaning. “So would you like me to perform the ceremony on Earth, in the atmosphere, on the Moon, or somewhere in the great beyond?” I would definitely have to rethink the Officiant rates on a few of those options.

For right now, I am happy on Earth offering customized wedding ceremonies to blissful couples.

Meet & Greet with the Miss Torrid hopefuls

Last night, Judy of Photo Artistry by Judy and I set in on the “Meet and Greet” with the thirty-some girls interested in entering the first Miss Torrid Pageant. They were all different ages and from different backgrounds. The really neat thing was that the very “first” Miss Torrid was sitting right there in the room. Of course, she hasn’t been picked yet. The girls have about five weeks to get their sponsors and registration fee turned in just to be a part of the pageant.

It is very exciting to be in the beginning planning stages of an event. The staff at Torrid is working really hard to make this a fun event for the girls. Both Judy and I agreed that we will attend the pre-events as they come up and as our schedules permit.

The staff at Torrid is still working on the venue for the pageant. It will tentatively be at the North Side High School Auditorium on Sunday, July 20, 2008 (at 7pm). So as the details are written in stone, I will share the information. This should be a very exciting pageant for all to attend.

Bridal Breakfast at the Monogram Shoppe

I had a fun morning with the ladies at The Monogram Shoppe in Covington Plaza yesterday. They had a bridal breakfast as the kickoff to the Mindy Weiss collection. Sara arranged for a “donut cake” from Krispy Kreme donuts at Jefferson Pointe. The store even matched the “tiffany blue” color from that is used in the Mindy Weiss wedding assortment. The “cake” was almost too cute to eat. I hope that you had a chance to stop by the shop to see the new collection. They have some delightful items for brides.

Toasting Tips tonight

Tonight is the March session of Bridal Academy. I am very excited about sharing my presentation on “Toasting Tips” to Brides and their guests.

Too many “Best Men” and “Maid’s of Honor” have fallen victim to too little preparation and practice before they spill their guts and their champagne in some cases for the bridal toast. I know that public speaking is one of the biggest fears so I hope that the tips I share this evening get passed on to all who need preparing for hopefully only five minutes or less of speaking praises to the new bride and groom.

Hope to see you there!

The Lincoln Museum Closing

The Lincoln Museum Closing

Fort Wayne got the shocking news that The Lincoln Museum will close to the public on June 30, 2008. Not only will Fort Wayne lose one of the most comprehensive collections of Abraham Lincoln history, we will also lose a site where many couples celebrated their wedding.

Many couples selected the Museum for the upscale down-town feel with a wonderful touch of history. Over the years, many of our Megasound Brides and Grooms got the double benefit of The Lincoln Museum for their most special day.

Once the “formal” parts of receptions were completed, guests could dance with the newlyweds or take a stroll through the Lincoln historical exhibits. The Museum offered self-guided tours as well as Docents who provided group tours during the evening.

After June 30th, couples will only be able to point to an empty building and say “that is where we had our wedding reception.”

From a historic stand point, hopefully, the Lincoln Foundation will be able to partner with other local museums such as The History Center to keep some of “Abe’s stuff” local. Traveling exhibits are wonderful for the masses. Let’s hope that Downtown Improvement District has the forethought to find someone to reopen the building to better serve wedding couples or repurpose the structure to keep the downtown area full of life.

"I Will Survive"

This day, in 1979, the song "I Will Survive," by Gloria Gaynor topped the charts and stayed there for 3 weeks. Some people dislike the song as something that is whiney and harsh; while others see the song as gaining realization and strength when the one they loved left them.

Even after 29 years, dancers still flock to the dance floor and sing the lyrics at the top of their lungs. People tend to identify with certain songs and even make them their personal anthem.

I guess that I like the version of the song that came out a few years ago on the internet with the “disco alien” singing her heart out. Any way that you look at it the song gives people a reason to get up off their seats and dance. Isn’t that the most important thing?

Daylight Savings Time

Since today we “spring ahead” for Daylight Savings Time in this part of Indiana, I thought that it would appropriate to think about songs that have to do with “time.” Over the last twenty-plus years of playing music at weddings and events, it is pretty interesting that there are so many songs about time. This list includes just a few of the titles and artists that I have actually played at events. Of course, there are songs that reference time in their lyrics and that list could go on forever.

“Time after Time” by Cyndi Lauper
“Summertime” by Will Smith
“Forever and Ever, Amen” By Randy Travis
“As Time goes by” by Al Martino
“Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley
“Yesterday” by the Beatles
“Twilight Time” by the Platters
“Walking after Midnight” by Patsy Cline
“Manic Monday” by the Bangles
“After Midnight” by Eric Clapton

"Miss Torrid Meeting"

Miss Torrid 2008

Judy (Photo Artistry by Judy) and I had a great first meeting with Jama from Torrid at the mall last night. Judy and I will be working together with Jama on the first “Miss Torrid” Pageant that will take place on Sunday, July 20, 2008.

This event is set up with a stylish pageant format. This will be a great opportunity for girls in the Fort Wayne and surrounding area as the winner will also have her portfolio submitted to “America’s Next Top Model.”

More details are coming soon so I will share the updates as I get them.

“A Complaint Free World”

I was asked to share a follow up about the “Complaint Free World” bracelet. I wear my bracelet almost every day as a reminder that constant complaining is bad for me.

Ideally, it would be great to live a life where everyday:
“I see skies of blue, and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world”

“What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong

We are faced with daily choices and we decide how we make our lives and our world around us. We each must find our own way to make our life more positive and “complaint-free.” I enjoy and find strength in music. I thought about how our lives are filled with positive messages through music and came up with a few examples to share:

1. “In every life we have some trouble. When you worry you make it double”
(Don’t Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFarren)
2. “Cause when you worry--Your face will frown--And that will bring everybody down”
(Don’t Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFarren)
3. “Eliminate the negative--Latch on to the affirmative”
(Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive by Ella Fitzgerald)
4. “You've got to spread joy up to the maximum--Bring gloom down to the minimum”
(Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive by Ella Fitzgerald)
5. “There are miracles in life I must achieve…But first I know it starts inside of me”
(I Believe I can fly by R. Kelly)
6. “Just whistle while you work (whistle)…And cheerfully together we can tidy up the place”
(Whistle while you work from Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs)
7. “There's no load I can't hold…Road so rough, this I know”
(Life is a Highway by Tom Cochran or Rascal Flatts)
8. “Can you practice what you preach…And would you turn the other cheek”
(Where is the Love by the Black Eyed Peas)
9. “If your life was bad to you…Just think what tomorrow will do”
(Don’t Stop by Christine McVie)
10. “When you get so sick of trying…Just hold tight to your dream”
(Hold on Tight by ELO)

Now, I have been accused of being “too happy.”
Maybe they were really just jealous that positive bubble was bigger than theirs.
I am willing to share my positive vibe “so come along for the ride.”
(Good Vibrations by Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch)

Great wedding Friday night

Friday night ushered in a reception for a couple who are just great together. Josh & Tonia rounded out their evening with a grand entrance to “This is how we do it!” What a great way to share such a fun party celebration. After the traditions, many of the guests made their way to the dance floor for the “Electric Slide” and the “Cupid Shuffle.” Near the end of the evening, the last of the guests circled together on the dance floor for “Piano Man.” I sure hope that I got a couple of good shots to share with Josh & Tonia.

Cake Cutting

I was at the Monogram Shoppe yesterday for their Bridal event. I had a blast talking to brides and helping out where I could. Before the ladies from Elegant Cakes by Carolyn got to the event, I got to cut their wonderful cakes for all to enjoy. It reminded me of all the times at weddings where I have given the “Cliff Notes” version of “How to cut at wedding Cake” to brides and grooms. And of course, the “most” important tip is not to smash cake in your new spouses face!!” Check out the full tip-page on Fort Wayne Weddings.com

I hope all of your cake cutting efforts go well too!!

P.S. all three varieties of cake were awesome!!

Christine Boulton (2-15-08)

On Friday night, we had the vendor presentation by Christine Boulton of thinklikeabride.com. We had about 35 guests in attendance. It was really neat having and outside perspective on the wedding market. It was nice to be able to network with other vendors as well.

It was a real burst of enthusiasm and excitement right before working with the brides at the show on Saturday.

Again, many thanks to
*Lisa Goodman (Fort Wayne Magazine) for the help to support the wedding industry by adding this event to the pre-show schedule.
*The Hilton Hotel for providing light refreshments and snack.
*Carolyn Pruden (Elegant Cakes by Carolyn) for providing her awesome cakes for all to enjoy.
*Judy Gaulden (Photo Artistry by Judy) for taking photos of the event. I can't wait to see them!
*Dawn Quick (The Wedding Place) and other Wedding Connection members for bringing Christine to Fort Wayne.
